More about Approvals

Request and review formal document approvals with a new beta - Google Workspace Updates - July 2019

Developing a feature to make it easy to request and give document approval
The process of aligning on the content of a document and getting approval on a document can be difficult when collaborating with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.
Approvals for Google Docs and Slides makes it easy to request and give document approval and see who has approved a document.

Approach

As a UX researcher at Key Lime Interactive working with Google Workspace my role was to help evaluate a concept of the approvals feature for Google Docs and Slides and guide product development. I worked closely with the engineering teams, product managers, UX designer and UX writer to understand the research needs of the team.

Process

As part of a much larger process, I conducted one round of moderated usability testing (n=10) to evaluate a redesign of the Approvals feature and to gauge launch readiness to enterprise Workspace users.

Next to that I conducted a survey (n=319) to understand interest for an approvals feature outside enterprise Workspace users and understand what it should look like for other user groups.
I also collaborated with the cross functional team to create a measurement plan to evaluate product success for Approvals across product rollout through Beta and launch.

Impact

The research helped the team evaluate Approvals for launch to enterprise Workspace users and understand what needed to be improved before launch.

Approvals was launched in November 2021.
